No, these qualifications require real onsite evidence and practical assessment. Some theory elements may be completed online, but the core qualification must take place in the workplace.

Do I need my AM2?
Yes. The AM2 (or AM2E / AM2D depending on your route) is the final endpoint assessment for both the NVQ and the EWA. You must pass it to become fully qualified.
What if I don’t have enough experience yet?
If you are still early in your career, the best route is to begin working toward the Level 3 NVQ. You can later progress into the Experienced Worker Assessment once you meet the experience requirements.
Is an apprenticeship free?
If you are employed and your employer is eligible, apprenticeships are fully funded. You should not be asked to pay anything towards your apprenticeship training.
What qualification do I need before starting the EWA?
You’ll need a Level 2 electrical theory qualification, plus sufficient industry experience (typically 3+ years domestic or 5+ years industrial/commercial).
Can I move from the Domestic route to the full Installation & Maintenance Electrician route later?
Yes. Many domestic electricians progress to broader commercial or industrial work. You may need to complete additional units or provide extra evidence, depending on your experience.
What evidence do I need for the EWA?
You’ll need examples of real onsite work covering key areas such as installation, inspection, testing, fault-finding, and safe isolation. Your assessor will guide you through exactly what is required.
How long does the Experienced Worker Assessment take?
It varies depending on how quickly you can gather and present the required evidence. Most experienced learners complete it within 2–6 months, but this can be shorter or longer.
Do I need to be employed to start the NVQ or EWA route?

Yes. Both pathways require you to be working within the electrical industry so you can generate the onsite evidence needed for assessment. Without current employment, neither route can be completed.

The NVQ is a full competency qualification completed while working on site, usually for people who are new to the industry or still building experience.
The Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) is for electricians with several years of proven industry experience who can demonstrate competence through existing work evidence.
